3 Powerful Stories of Angels in NDEs

Explore 3 Powerful Stories of Angels in NDEs that reveal inspiring testimonies of comfort, guidance, and God’s presence during near-death experiences.

e Powerful Stories of Angels in NDEs remind us that death is not the end, nor is it a journey we take alone. For centuries, experiencers have described encounters with radiant beings of light—understood to be angels—who comfort, guide, and escort souls into the afterlife. Near-death experiences (NDEs) offer countless testimonies of angelic presence, and these stories are both deeply comforting and profoundly awe-inspiring.

In this article, I’ll share four powerful accounts of angelic encounters drawn from my books. Together, these testimonies reveal how angels minister to the dying, how they reflect God’s love, and why discernment is vital when interpreting these extraordinary experiences.

What the Bible Says About Angels

Before we look at the modern testimonies, it’s important to anchor ourselves in Scripture. The Bible speaks often of angels as messengers and servants of God:

  • “Are not all angels ministering spirits sent to serve those who will inherit salvation?” (Hebrews 1:14)
  • “The angel of the Lord encamps around those who fear him, and he delivers them.” (Psalm 34:7)
  • “He will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways.” (Psalm 91:11)

In nearly every biblical appearance, angels come not to draw attention to themselves but to glorify God and accomplish His purposes. That theme shows up repeatedly in modern near-death experiences too.

What We Learn from 4 Powerful Stories of Angels in NDEs

One of the most common roles angels seem to play in NDEs is escorting believers into the presence of God. Their ministry mirrors the story of Lazarus in Luke 16:22: “The time came when the beggar died and the angels carried him to Abraham’s side.”

1. Jim Woodford: Escorted by Radiant Angels

Jim Woodford, a Canadian pilot, suffered a medical emergency and clinically died for several hours. In his account, he describes being surrounded by angels who lifted him and carried him toward heavenly realms. He marveled at their size, radiance, and the overwhelming love they radiated. Their role wasn’t simply to transport him but to assure him that he was not alone, to flood him with peace, and to prepare him for the glory of Heaven.

Woodford’s description resonates with Jesus’ words in Luke 16:22—that angels carry the faithful into eternity.

2. Dale Black: Guided Through the Afterlife

Another powerful story comes from Captain Dale Black, the sole survivor of a fatal plane crash. In Real Near-Death Experience Stories, Dale recalls how, as his body lay broken, he was guided into the afterlife by heavenly beings he understood to be angels. Their presence brought profound peace in the midst of unimaginable trauma.

Dale described them as beings of light, filled with love and compassion. They did not glorify themselves, but they helped orient him toward the breathtaking sights of Heaven, where Jesus Himself would soon become the central focus of his NDE.

His story reflects God’s promise in Psalm 91:11: “For he will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways.”

3. Randy Kay: Prepared to Meet Jesus

One of the most vivid modern angel testimonies comes from Randy Kay, a corporate executive who died after a blood clot stopped his heart. During his near-death experience, Randy encountered an angel who walked with him through his heavenly journey.

This angel radiated both majesty and gentleness. Randy described how the angel did not distract him with self-importance but continually prepared him to meet Jesus Christ. The angel reassured him, calmed him, and pointed his attention forward toward the One who is the center of Heaven.

Randy’s story beautifully illustrates Hebrews 1:14: “Are not all angels ministering spirits sent to serve those who will inherit salvation?” The angel was not the focus of Randy’s testimony. Jesus was. And that is the mark of an authentic angelic encounter.

Angels as Messengers and Comforters

Beyond escorting souls, angels in NDEs often serve as messengers and comforters. Some share words of reassurance, reminding experiencers that they are loved and not forgotten. Others communicate that the person must return to earthly life, often because their mission is not yet complete.

For example, many of the stories I’ve collected describe angels telling the dying that it is “not their time” yet. While initially disappointing, this message becomes an anchor for those who return with renewed faith and purpose. The angel’s words realign their focus toward God’s plan for their earthly lives.

Angels in Contrast: The Need for Discernment

As glorious as angelic encounters in NDEs can be, discernment is vital. Scripture warns us that, “Satan himself masquerades as an angel of light” (2 Corinthians 11:14). In The NDE Conspiracy, I document testimonies where radiant beings appeared kind and benevolent, yet their message subtly undermined the truth of the Gospel.

These deceptive entities may present themselves as angels, but their role is to distort God’s truth. Rather than glorifying Jesus Christ, they promote vague spirituality, universalism, or self-exaltation. This is why John instructs us: “Dear friends, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God.” (1 John 4:1).

True angelic encounters, like Randy Kay’s or Jim Woodford’s, consistently point the experiencer toward God, His Word, and His Son. False messengers, in contrast, leave people with confusion or doctrines that contradict Scripture.

How Angels Reflect God’s Character

The presence of angels in NDEs reminds us of God’s care for His children. When believers report angelic escorts or comforters, they mirror the truth that God never abandons His people. Even in death, His messengers surround us.

Yet angels are never the center of Heaven. The testimonies from Woodford, Black, Barr, and Kay all highlight that angels, majestic as they are, continually point toward Jesus Christ. Just as in Scripture, their ministry is to glorify God, not themselves.

Why These Stories Matter

So why should we take these angelic encounters seriously?

  1. They align with Scripture – From Lazarus being carried by angels in Luke 16:22 to the angel who strengthened Jesus in Gethsemane (Luke 22:43), the Bible confirms that angels are active in the lives (and deaths) of God’s people.
  2. They bring comfort – NDE testimonies remind us that death is not a lonely passage. Angels accompany us, and their presence reassures us of God’s faithfulness.
  3. They point to Christ – Authentic angelic encounters never replace or compete with Jesus. They serve as escorts and messengers, but the glory always belongs to the Lord.

Conclusion: Are Angels Present in NDEs?

Yes—angels are undeniably present in many near-death experiences. From Jim Woodford’s radiant escorts, to Dale Black’s heavenly guides, and Randy Kay’s angelic companion who prepared him to meet Jesus, the testimonies are remarkably consistent.

But discernment remains essential. The NDE Conspiracy reminds us that not every radiant being is from God. The true measure of an angelic encounter is whether it points us toward Christ and aligns with Scripture.

At the end of the day, angels are not the focus of Heaven—Jesus is. Angels are His servants, His messengers, and His escorts, but they bow before the same Lord we worship. Their presence in NDEs is one more confirmation that God’s Word is true and His promises never fail.
