When Mike Olsen went in for a lung transplant, no one expected his heart to stop and his spirit to rise above the operating table. What he reports next is astonishing: he met Jesus, thanked his organ donor in heaven, and returned with a deep, steady peace that has marked his life ever sincee
The Long Road to Transplant: Diagnosis, Waiting, and a Sign of Hope
In 2014 Mike was diagnosed with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF)—a relentless scarring of the lungs that steadily robbed him of breath and strength. After a biopsy, he required oxygen 24/7, hauling heavy tanks everywhere he went. A preacher with a heart for people, Mike still advocated publicly for IPF awareness and mentored other patients online. He chose not to grow bitter, but to grow better—pressing into God’s presence and supporting fellow sufferers.
During a particularly hard stretch, Mike and his wife were driving late at night singing “Father, I Place My Life in Your Hands.” Moments later, a deer appeared inches from their bumper—and then vanished. The couple received it as a personal sign that God saw their struggle and cared about their burden. The image of the deer echoed Scripture’s thirst for God—“As a deer pants for flowing streams, so pants my soul for you, O God” (Psalm 42:1, ESV).
“We Have Lungs for You”: The Call That Changed Everything
After a long wait on the transplant list, Mike sensed a nudge from the Lord while working on folk art: “Put your tools away. Go now.” Minutes later, the hospital called—lungs were available. During surgery, a curious event woke his wife at home: an oxygen tank fell loudly on the porch. When she phoned the hospital, she learned the first lung had just gone in, a providential confirmation she’s never forgotten.
Mike Olsen NDE in the OR: Leaving the Body, Accusations Silenced, Peace Flooding In
On the operating table Mike rose toward the ceiling, fully aware of what was happening below. Accusing thoughts rushed in, but he rebuked them in Jesus’ name and the accusations went silent. He then saw swirling, rainbow-like light—and with it a profound cleansing and clarity: he had worried about too much on earth. In the presence of heaven, he knew grace, not performance, had settled his standing with God. As Scripture affirms, “By grace you have been saved through faith… not a result of works” (Ephesians 2:8–9, ESV).
“These Are Your New Lungs”: A Commission from Jesus
Mike couldn’t make out every detail of Jesus’ face, but he felt the Lord’s nearness. Jesus placed a hand on Mike’s left shoulder and said, “These are your new lungs—receive them.” Mike responded, “Yes, Lord,” and immediately began descending back to the table. He sensed his agreement mattered—that receiving another’s organ was itself a sacred “yes” to life and calling.
Meeting His Donor in Heaven: First Words Out of the Coma
After roughly ten days in a coma, the nurse removed Mike’s tube. His first words to a visiting friend were stunning: “Yes, I went to heaven; I got to thank my donor.” Independent of Mike’s account, friends reported timely impressions and prayers during his surgery—moments that later lined up with his experience. Mike’s wife kept recalling the fallen oxygen tank that struck exactly when the first lung was placed.
While Scripture doesn’t answer every question about the precise contours of afterlife encounters, believers have long testified to God’s personal care at death and beyond (see Psalm 116:15). Mike’s experience underscores this: heaven is real, and God is intimately present.
Life After the NDE: Calm, Compassion, and a New Mission
Since returning, Mike describes a quiet, steady calm. He worries less, trusts more, and senses a greater compassion—especially for people on the margins. He loves to pause, look someone in the eye, share a piece of his story, and offer prayer. He says the “joy of the kingdom” is undeniable, and he wants others to taste it.
“Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you… Let not your hearts be troubled.” — John 14:27, ESV
Why Mike’s NDE Story Matters
Mike’s account matters because it reframes long, grinding suffering with real hope. His years with IPF and the agonizing transplant wait culminated in an encounter that replaced anxiety with steady peace and turned organ donation from a medical procedure into a sacred gift of life—honoring donors and comforting their families. The lasting change he carries—greater calm, compassion, and courage—shows recognizable spiritual fruit, not momentary sensationalism. The silencing of condemnation and the experience of grace speak directly to those who feel buried under guilt, while the timely confirmations around his surgery (the fallen oxygen tank, friends’ impressions) encourage us to notice the quiet ways God reassures us. Most importantly, Mike models a simple, practical response: look people in the eye, share hope, pray when prompted, and serve the person in front of you—living proof that death is a doorway, not a dead end.
