Dean Braxton NDE: Clinically Dead for 1 Hour 45 Minutes—What He Says He Saw in Heaven

Dean Braxton's NDE—From sepsis to Heaven: clinically dead 1h45m, he reports meeting Jesus, overwhelming grace, and miraculous healing.

When you listen to Dean Braxton tell his story, you’re struck by two things immediately: the clarity with which he remembers what happened and the peace that still rests on every word. In 2006, a routine procedure for a kidney stone turned into a medical crisis. Dean went septic, his organs began to fail, and the medical records indicate he was clinically dead for approximately one hour and forty-five minutes. During that window, Dean says he left his body, entered Heaven, encountered the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, met redeemed loved ones, and received a mission before returning to his body miraculously healed.

Below, I’ll walk you through Dean’s near-death experience (NDE), what led up to it, what he encountered, and how it changed him.

The Medical Emergency That Sparked Dean Braxton’s NDE

Dean entered a Seattle-area hospital to address a stubborn kidney stone. Unbeknownst to the care team, he was also fighting a kidney infection. After lithotripsy, infection moved into his bloodstream. Sepsis followed. His breath grew short; he was moved toward ICU; he could sense he was dying. What surprised him was not fear, but a profound inner assurance: “I’m going home.” That phrase—home—framed everything that came next.

Dean Braxton NDE: Leaving the Body and Moving “Faster Than a Blink”

With his wife present and a physician explaining the need for a PICC line to push stronger antibiotics, Dean says he suddenly left his body. He didn’t look back. Before him appeared what he describes as a window-like light (not a literal window, but the best earthly analogy). He experienced the transition the way the Apostle Paul phrases it: “absent from the body…present with the Lord” (cf. 2 Cor. 5:8). Dean emphasizes the speed of that movement—“faster than a blink.”

On the way, he perceived streaks of light—like shooting stars—moving even faster than he was. He later understood those lights as the prayers of people interceding for him (and for others). It’s a striking image: the communion of saints on earth intersecting a soul’s homeward journey.

Crossing the Threshold: Peace Beyond Peace

Dean remembers leaving Earth’s atmosphere and entering an environment where nothing was wrong. He calls it “past peace”—not the relief we feel after trouble, but a realm where trouble simply isn’t present. Think of it as peace without an opposite. That sense of rightness set the tone for everything that followed.

Homecoming in Heaven: Family, the Redeemed, and the Godhead

Arriving in Heaven, Dean describes a welcome of generations—believing family members who had preceded him, along with the redeemed from across time. He also encountered angels and, centrally, the triune God: the Father, the Son (Jesus), and the Holy Spirit. He’s careful with language here. He doesn’t collapse the Persons of the Trinity into one Person; rather, he testifies to an inseparable unity of presence and love. Speaking of Jesus never felt like speaking of Jesus apart from the Father and the Spirit.

Overwhelmed, Dean found himself repeating a single phrase: “Thank you.” He says he could have said it for 3,000 years and not exhausted the gratitude he felt.

Dean Braxton NDE: Life Review Through the Lens of Grace

Like many near-death experiencers, Dean testifies to a life review. What stands out is the grace permeating the experience. When he looked into the eyes of Jesus, he says he was seen “as if I had never sinned.” For Dean, that reframed everything he thought he knew about forgiveness and sonship. Since returning, he says prayer now feels like going home to talk to his Father—intimacy replacing distance (cf. Heb. 4:16).

“It’s Not Your Time”: Sent Back With a Mission

Dean didn’t want to leave. But he says Jesus told him—twice—“It’s not your time. Go back.” He continued to move through Heaven, then returned to Jesus, received the same instruction, and obeyed. He remembers re-entering his body in a curious way—coming down face-first, then flipping over before settling back in. The sense of assignment was clear: share what you’ve seen and point people to the One who loves them.

Miraculous Restoration: Walking Out Healed

Back in the hospital, the damage was extensive—kidneys shut down, lung and heart issues from the ordeal, and CPR strong enough that cracked ribs would have been expected. Yet Dean reports no broken ribs and a full recovery he attributes to God’s intervention. He says that if not for the medical records and physician notes, many would doubt it ever happened. Instead, he walked out of the hospital healed and changed.

What Dean Emphasizes Most About Heaven

  • Belonging: “I fit there.” No orientation, no ramp-up, no quarantine—only rightness and welcome.
  • Life without death: No funerals. No partings. Family reconciled, smiling, getting along—in his words, a sure sign you’re in Heaven.
  • The heart of Jesus: Details people often ask for—eye color, hair, physical features—fade in importance in the presence of His love. What matters is who He is and how He receives us.

Why Dean Braxton’s NDE Matters

Dean’s testimony doesn’t aim to compete with Scripture; it echoes and personalizes Scripture. For those who wonder whether God is near, Dean bears witness that the Father is better than you imagine, prayer is more powerful than you think, and grace is more complete than you’ve dared to hope (cf. Ps. 16:11; John 14:2–3).

As with any NDE, the point isn’t to chase the sensational. It’s to consider the invitation underneath: if Heaven is this real—and if Jesus receives sinners with this kind of love—how should we live now? Dean’s answer is simple: trust Christ, walk in His grace, and let your life become a thank-you.
