Ivan Tuttle NDE: From Hell to Heaven and Back Again

Discover Ivan Tuttle’s NDE testimony—dragged to hell, shown heaven, and sent back with a warning and hope. Read his story and watch the full interview.

Near-death experiences (NDEs) are some of the most compelling accounts we have of what lies beyond the veil of death. Few testimonies are as vivid—or as sobering—as the story of Ivan Tuttle, a man who died in 1978 and spent hours outside his body, encountering both the terrors of hell and the glories of heaven before returning to life. His testimony stands as a powerful warning about the reality of sin and the urgency of salvation, while also offering breathtaking hope of God’s mercy and the beauty of eternity.

In this article, we’ll explore Ivan’s incredible journey as he describes it in his book A Journey to Hell, Heaven, and Back and in my interview with him on The Shaun Tabatt Show (watch here).

A Sudden Death at Age 26

In 1978, Ivan was a successful 26-year-old working at a car dealership when he began experiencing unusual pain in his leg. Doctors diagnosed him with a blood clot, but like many young men, he shrugged off the warnings. Within days, the clot worsened, and Ivan was rushed to the hospital.

One evening, he felt an overwhelming wave of exhaustion come over him. Moments later, he realized with terrifying clarity: he was dead. His spirit had separated from his body, and what happened next would change his life forever.

Dragged into the Depths of Hell

Immediately after leaving his body, Ivan felt himself pulled downward into darkness. He was dragged by demonic beings who inflicted torment on him. Unlike physical pain, which can lead a person to lose consciousness, in the spirit realm there was no escape. Every sensation was magnified and unrelenting.

“Your whole being feels every ounce of pain. And here’s the thing—it lasts forever. It never stops.” – Ivan Tuttle

In hell, Ivan witnessed former pastors and evangelists who had fallen into sin. God did not permit him to reveal names, but he saw firsthand that no position in ministry guarantees salvation. Some were there for sexual sins, others for theft and deception. The warnings were clear: hidden sins, unrepented of, can destroy even the most outwardly successful Christian life.

Face-to-Face with Satan

Perhaps the most startling part of Ivan’s experience was his encounter with Satan himself. Far from the grotesque caricatures of popular imagination, Satan appeared as an incredibly handsome, radiant being—still carrying traces of the light he once bore as Lucifer.

“He is the most beautiful creature you’ve ever seen on earth… He could talk anybody into doing anything. He has so much power as long as you don’t have Christ in you.” – Ivan Tuttle

Ivan observed how demons served Satan like an organized army. They strategized ways to corrupt humanity, particularly by targeting children. He was shown how entertainment, media, and even certain video games were being used to separate children from their parents’ influence, cutting off godly wisdom and opening doors to darkness.

God’s Intervention

Just when the torment seemed unbearable, Ivan heard a voice that changed everything:

“It’s not his time. I made a promise to his mother. You must let him go.”

The power of God’s word was undeniable. The demons immediately released him, cowering in fear. Ivan was then transported out of hell and found himself at the gates of heaven, where he was greeted by a mighty angel.

A Glimpse of Heaven’s Glory

The contrast could not have been greater. In heaven, Ivan’s senses were heightened beyond imagination. Colors, sounds, and fragrances were richer than anything on earth. Even the music was alive—penetrating spirit, soul, and body all at once.

He saw the Tree of Life, bearing twelve different fruits that appeared in season, sometimes all at once at God’s command. He also witnessed one of heaven’s most tender realities: the nursery where miscarried and aborted babies are cared for. Parents who enter heaven are reunited with their children and allowed to hold them, experiencing the love they had missed on earth.

Ivan also learned about the different types of angels:

  • Helper Angels, who assist believers throughout their earthly lives.
  • Guardian Angels, assigned to protect individuals.
  • Messenger Angels, often winged, who bring specific words from God.
  • Archangels, beings of immense power who carry out world-shaping assignments.

Prophetic Warnings of the Future

While in heaven, Ivan was shown glimpses of future events. He saw rivers turning red overnight, massive earthquakes, and global turmoil. Yet God also revealed a coming outpouring of His glory. Ivan described it as a “Peter anointing”—where ordinary believers would carry such power that even their shadows would heal the sick.

This dual vision of judgment and revival reflects the urgency of our times: darkness will increase, but God’s light will shine all the brighter through His people.

Sent Back with a Mission

Although heaven was glorious, Ivan was told he could not stay. God had a purpose for his return: to testify of what he had seen. Doctors later confirmed he had been dead for nearly three hours, with rigor mortis already beginning to set in. Yet when he came back, God had miraculously restored his organs—his heart, lungs, and kidneys showed no damage.

Ivan returned with a message he has carried faithfully ever since:

  1. Heaven is real. It is more beautiful and awe-inspiring than we can imagine.
  2. Hell is real. It is a place of unending torment, prepared for the devil and his demons—but tragically, many souls end up there.
  3. Jesus is the only way. Christianity is not just a confession but a daily walk of becoming Christlike. Hidden sins and compromised living carry eternal consequences.

Why Ivan’s Story Matters Today

In an age where many dismiss the afterlife as myth or metaphor, Ivan’s testimony is a stark reminder of eternal realities. His story challenges us to examine our own lives: Are we truly living for Christ, or merely going through religious motions?

Ivan’s encounter underscores the urgency of repentance, the necessity of surrendering every hidden part of our lives to God, and the hope that awaits those who trust in Christ.

Final Reflections

Ivan Tuttle’s near-death experience stands as both a warning and an invitation. The warning is clear: hell is real and sin has eternal consequences. But the invitation is even greater: heaven is real and God desires for every person to experience eternal life with Him through Jesus Christ.

If you’ve never wrestled with these questions before, let Ivan’s story be your wake-up call. The choices you make now will echo in eternity.
