For most of his life, Jim Woodford was a man chasing success. A skilled airline pilot with thousands of hours in the cockpit, he had everything—wealth, property, cars, and prestige. Yet beneath the polished exterior lay a deep emptiness that no amount of possessions could fill.
Jim freely admits that God was never part of his priorities. Religion was for others, not for him. He considered himself a decent man, but in his own words, he was living for himself, blind to the grace of God all around him.
That all changed the day he collapsed behind the wheel of his pickup truck.
A Body in Crisis
Years before his NDE, Jim had been diagnosed with Guillain-Barré, a rare and debilitating autoimmune disease that left him in constant agony. His nervous system misfired like exposed electrical wires, and no treatment seemed to bring lasting relief. In desperation, Jim turned to narcotic painkillers. One evening, seeking escape from the relentless torment, he swallowed far more than prescribed.
Instead of relief, a burning sensation shot through his body. His lungs constricted as though he were drowning. Gasping for air, he slumped forward on the steering wheel. For all medical purposes, Jim Woodford was gone.
Poised Between Heaven and Hell
What happened next defied explanation. Jim recalls lifting his hand toward the setting sun and uttering three desperate words: “God, forgive me.” That simple cry became the turning point of his eternity.
Suddenly, Jim was outside his body, looking at his own lifeless form slumped in the truck. Within moments, he was pulled upward into a tunnel of brilliant light. Racing at indescribable speed yet feeling no wind, he was carried feet-first toward a radiant realm.
At the end of the tunnel, he emerged into an otherworldly landscape more beautiful than anything he had ever known. Colors shimmered with life. The grass beneath his feet rippled with light. It was paradise.
Yet before he fully entered Heaven, Jim was shown the terrifying reality of the other side. He glimpsed a realm of darkness and despair, a foretaste of hell that underscored the gravity of rejecting God’s mercy.
The apostle Paul wrote, “For He rescued us from the domain of darkness, and transferred us to the kingdom of His beloved Son” (Colossians 1:13). Jim’s journey embodies that truth—saved by grace at the very edge of eternity.
The Face of Angels and the Glory of Christ
Jim describes being greeted by radiant angels who escorted him through the wonders of Heaven. He saw fields alive with beauty, heard music that seemed woven into creation itself, and even encountered the City of Heaven with its glory beyond imagination.
But the most unforgettable moment came when Jim stood face to face with Jesus. The love in His eyes was overwhelming—pure, unconditional, and unlike anything Jim had ever known. In that moment, all the emptiness of his earthly pursuits was eclipsed by the fullness of God’s presence.
As John 14:2 reminds us, “In my Father’s house are many rooms… I go to prepare a place for you.” Jim had been given a glimpse of that very reality.
Sent Back with a Mission
After eleven hours without measurable brain activity, Jim miraculously returned to life. Doctors and nurses nicknamed him “Lazarus.” But Jim knew he had been spared for a purpose: to share the hope of Heaven and the saving love of Jesus Christ.
No longer chasing worldly success, Jim devoted his life to testifying of what he saw. His story continues to bring comfort to grieving families and awaken faith in those who wonder if Heaven is real.
